Ahmad Jamal was born Frederick Russell Jones on the 2nd of July, 1930, that is of course, over 90 years ago. He is an outstanding American Jazz pianist and also a composer, bandleader, and educator. For five decades, he has been one of the most successful small-group leaders in Jazz.
The film shows him playing at a concert with a superb band in his unique style. When describing his own work, he says, “I like doing ballads. They’re hard to play. It takes years of living, really, to read them properly.” Sometimes, as with good whisky ageing helps the whole process. Ahmad is certainly going strong.
