The Esala Perahera is undoubtedly one of the greatest festivals in South East Asia. It takes place in Kandy, Sri Lanka over many nights usually in early August each year. Music and dance, lights and elephants combine with Buddhism to set the town alive in a rich, memorable way. You can certainly see the dancers and drummers in action all year round and you can visit the Temple of the Tooth which provides a terrific background to a huge event.
